13 Years Lost by Christine Sadry is a wonderful memoir detailing the author's life starting in Poland at 4 years old and ending in retirement in Florida. I really enjoyed this memoir for a number of reasons. Firstly, I felt for Christine as a child in communist Poland who loses her mother, is abandoned by her father, and eventually abused by adoptive parents in the US. I can't imagine how she remained so strong and did so well in her later years.
Secondly, I loved learning about her time spent working with the United Nations. There is so much history I barely know, and Christine touched on several wars in countries of which I have very little knowledge. Her career path is amazing - as is her desire to keep pushing herself to greater heights. Lastly, I loved her honesty. She didn't put herself on a pedestal and allowed her readers to see the good, the bad, and the ugly. It is difficult to be as vulnerable as Christine, and I applaud her for telling her story without leaving out the messy parts. If you enjoy a good memoir, then this might just be the book for you!
