Memento Mori by Eunice Hong is a contemporary fiction that weaves together ancient fables and the protagonist's grapple with life, death, and mental health. In many ways, this fiction novel reads like a memoir. As a reader, I immediately became part of the protagonist's life, although she is never named.
The story starts as she tells a bedtime story to her younger brother, the Greek mythological story of Eurydice - complete with her brother's interjections. Throughout the novel, we learn of more mythological stories, neuroscience from one of her friends, and several difficult family traumas and how they relate to the protagonist and her world - and of course, our world. This story is not fluid like a novel, but reads more like journal entries. The reader is given snapshots into her world and her thoughts. It's a story that will make you think about what you have, what you think you know, and what you want out of life.
