Mona's Eyes is a literary fiction by Thomas Schlesser. Thomas is both an author and an art history teacher, and Mona's Eyes puts these two loves into one beautiful work. We meet Mona, a little girl who may be going blind. Her grandfather, Henry, decides that if she is to lose her sight, he wants to be sure she has the right kinds of things to remember. So, once a week, he takes her to one of three art museums in Paris. These trips are juxtaposed with Mona's everyday life.
I found the book to be fascinating. Not only do I love Mona and Henry, but I loved learning about 52 different artists, what they wanted others to understand about art, and the lesson behind each work. Since I listened to the audiobook, I didn't have the works of art at my fingertips, but Thomas's description of each piece put it into my mind's eye. (And of course, since I am known to my family as 'Google Mom,' I looked them up after listening to the chapters!) With Henry's understanding of art and Mona's unique insights, I felt as if I had a front row tour. Even as someone who knows little about art, I found everything I learned to be fascinating. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read this book and know you'll feel the same!
