Mutant Message Down Under by Marlo Morgan is a contemporary fiction book based on Marlo's experience with an Aboriginal tribe in Australia during a 3-month walkabout. In the author message at the beginning of the book, Marlo states it is fiction. However, she also states that she did indeed go on a walkabout, away from civilization, while learning about a tribe near extinction. Although I found it difficult to get into, once I understood that Marlo, nicknamed Mutant by the tribespeople, was going to immerse herself in their culture, I was hooked. I particularly enjoyed learning about their healing practices, their lack of the kinds of sicknesses found in modern societies, and how they communicated. Additionally, I enjoyed learning about a culture so vastly different from my own, especially one deemed primitive, unintellectual, and hardly worth noticing. I hate how one society deems another worthless and throws out all they have to offer. There have been many people who say Marlo lied about everything and that the Aboriginal tribe she wrote about does not exist. Even if that is true, I think we can learn a lot from her words - from the lessons she gained from her walkabout.
