Book Review: Remarkably Bright Creatures

Remarkably Bright Creatures is a literary fiction by Shelby Van Pelt. I waited a long time to read this book because I couldn't imagine enjoying a book with an octopus as one of the main characters. I humbly admit I was wrong and am so glad I decided to give this book a try!

Marcellus is an octopus in an aquarium who is much brighter than anyone knows. He becomes ensconced in some town scuttlebutt and does what he can to help two lonely, heartbroken people discover the truth and find some happiness.

Shelby does an amazing job with character development. I immediately fell in love with Tova and Cameron, as well as all the supporting roles like Ethan and the Knit-Wits. Of course, there were times I wanted to shake a few characters to help them see what they were missing! And the ending? I laughed. And cried. And sighed that I would no longer be part of these people's lives. If you haven't read it, don't wait. It's a must-read!
