The Correspondent is a contemporary fiction by Virginia Evans. As a lover of words, this novel had me from the beginning! Sybil is an elderly woman who has spent her entire life writing letters. To whom? Everyone! Politicians, authors, neighbors, family, friends.
This is an epistolary novel - with letters going from Sybil and responses to her. Through these letters, we learn about Sybil, her life - both her joy and her grief. We also become acquainted with several people including her ex-husband, a neighbor, a suitor, a best friend, her children, and the teenage son of a past work associate. Then, just to make it even more fun, Sybil is also an avid reader. Nearly all her letters tell what book she is currently reading, and those returning letters tell her of their most recent reads. Despite her stellar career, Sybil discovers that at the end of her life, she isn't as happy as she had imagined. And something from her past has kept her from moving forward emotionally - for years. So many times, I wanted to yell at her to figure it out! You'll have to read it to discover if she finally did!
