Book Review: The Frozen River

The Frozen River is a historical fiction by Ariel Lawhon. I read this book on the recommendation of my daughter and couldn't be happier that I listened! Ariel introduces us to Martha Ballard, a real-life midwife from the late 1700s who rarely lost a mother or child, which was amazing for that time.

But Ariel brought out more than Martha's midwifery. She takes us up close and personal during a trial where Rebecca Foster accuses two men of raping her. Because of her position as midwife and witnessing the aftermath, Martha is called to the trial. Despite the horrific circumstances, I loved seeing Martha bristle over the unfair treatment of women in the court system.

And what I loved most was her amazing relationship with her husband Ephraim. Quite frankly, it made me miss my dear Bruce because he loved and trusted me the way Ephraim did Martha.

I was hooked from page one and never wanted it to end. If you are late to the party like me and haven't read the book, do so today!
