A Journey Through Time and Place
When Jim Gulledge first set out to write, he couldn't have anticipated the expansive journey his novel would take. "Green Forest, Red Earth, Blue Sea" is structured as a triptych—three interconnected stories set in different regions of North Carolina and spanning a century. The novel begins in the Reconstruction era, transitions to the end of World War I and the Great Depression, and finally lands in the 1970s. Each part of the book presents a unique narrative while collectively painting a vivid picture of the state's transformation through time. Jim described his initial struggle and eventual realization of crafting a three-part narrative: "I didn't know I was tackling this at first... it began as a novella, but then it became clear that there were more parts to this story than I initially perceived." The result is a rich tapestry of history and personalities that captures the essence of North Carolina. Characters with Roots A significant element of Jim’s storytelling involves deeply rooted characters drawn from his own family history and experiences. For instance, Jule Elliot, a Native American woman in the second part, was inspired by Jim's ancestral connections to the Choctaw, which later turned out to be Cherokee. His characters embody the resilience of individuals navigating personal and societal challenges, while also preserving the cultural heritage of the region. Writing from the Heart Jim’s process as a writer is as intriguing as the stories he tells. Our discussion revealed his reliance on intuitive storytelling guided by an almost mystical voice that directs him. "I was the typist—when the voice started, I would type, and when it stopped, I would stop," Jim explained. This heartfelt approach results in characters and narratives that feel deeply authentic. For Jim, writing is often most productive away from home, in places where everyday distractions are minimal. Retreats to places like Saluda, South Carolina, and Kin Abbey have provided the peaceful solitude necessary to let his creativity flow. Conclusion Jim Gulledge’s "Green Forest, Red Earth, Blue Sea" is not just a novel but an exploration of North Carolina's diverse landscapes and its past. It's a journey through time and place, masterfully woven through the voices of deeply human characters. Whether you're a history buff or simply love a good story, Jim's work offers a refreshing perspective on the state's legacy.
