Meeting the Accidental Author
In our conversation, Eric shared how he stumbled into writing "Taught," a journey born out of personal experiences and deep reflections during the COVID-19 pandemic. Eric, a former middle and high school teacher with an extensive background in education nonprofits, found himself writing to make sense of the complexities around him. What started as a therapeutic exercise evolved into a gripping narrative about a teacher and a former student embarking on a road trip during the pandemic. This "accidental" book captivated me as a reader and serves as a reminder that inspiration can strike anywhere, compelling us to create without an initial intent.

Exploring Dynamic Characters and Themes
Eric's novel presents two main characters, Jerry Brown, a teacher, and Malik Drummond, a former student, whose unexpected reunion challenges their perspectives. The plot dives deep into their contrasting realities, exposing the readers to various societal issues such as race and privilege. Eric candidly discussed the challenges of writing from Malik's perspective, a young black man, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and collaboration.

The narrative tension in "Taught" resonates with many educators caught in the whirlwind of the pandemic, navigating the unfamiliar world of remote teaching. Eric skillfully depicts this struggle, making the story relatable to a broad audience beyond just educators.

The Impact of "Taught"
As our conversation progressed, Eric expressed a hope that "Taught" acts as a catalyst for discussions on race, education, and healing. Literature, he believes, should open our hearts and minds, urging us to confront and understand the polarities surrounding us. This novel is not just a narrative but a springboard for meaningful dialogue, challenging readers to reflect on their perceptions and the realities of those around them.

The Journey Forward
Eric is an inspiration to fellow authors, highlighting that the title of "author" came as an unexpected yet welcomed new chapter in his life. While he currently isn't working on a new project, the potential for more stories remains. His advice to writers is simple yet profound—follow the story where it takes you and embrace the journey of discovery that writing inevitably brings.

I encourage you to pick up a copy of "Taught" and immerse yourself in this thought-provoking narrative. Eric's story is a testament to the power of literature in bridging divides and fostering understanding. Whether you’re an author seeking inspiration or a reader looking for a compelling new book, "Taught" offers profound insights into the human condition.

Join our conversation on this journey by heading over to the Novels N Latte Book Club on Facebook, where you can discuss the book and even win a print copy of "Taught" by sharing your thoughts on our conversation. Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences related to Eric’s story or your own writing journey in the comments below.
