Family Ties, Corporate Lies: A Thrilling Tale of Feuds and Deception with Author D.R. Shores
My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is DR Shores, author of the book Shallow Stock. Raised on the Yorkshire coastline in the United Kingdom, D R Shores studied engineering prior to a twenty-five year career in business. Literature has always been a passion, with a taste ranging from Sigrid Nunez and Thomas Harris to established twentieth-century classics from Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ayn Rand and Milan Kundera. Now living with his family and introverted dog in the east midlands area of England, his other interests include music, current affairs, volunteering and keeping fit.

This month, I had the incredible opportunity to chat with DR Shore about his electrifying novel Shallow Stock - a corporate thriller that's so much more than just another business drama. Imagine "Succession" meets deep psychological exploration, and you're halfway there!
What Makes This Book Special DR's novel brilliantly weaves together multiple complex plot lines - from corporate rivalries and black-tie affairs to unexpected touches of human trafficking and love interests. But what truly sets this book apart is how he transforms what could be a straightforward business narrative into a profound exploration of human motivations. The two main characters, Wynter McGlynn and Julian Dayton, are masterfully crafted. They're not your typical corporate stereotypes, but nuanced individuals wrestling with ambition, family legacy, and personal morality. DR doesn't just tell you their story - he invites you to understand them. A Peek Behind the Writing Curtain What fascinated me most during our conversation was DR's writing process. He's a dedicated "pantser" - meaning he doesn't meticulously plot out every detail beforehand, but lets the story and characters evolve organically. As someone who writes similarly, I found his approach refreshing and relatable! The book emerged during the pandemic, a time when many of us were exploring creative outlets. DR didn't set out to write a specific genre thriller, but instead followed his characters' journeys, allowing themes of competition, collaboration, and morality to naturally emerge.
