Telling the Hard Parts: Memoir Writing, Memory, and Finding Compassion with Author Slade Williams

Picture
Writing a memoir is a unique and deeply personal journey for any author. Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with Slade Williams for an episode of Online for Authors. Slade is in the midst of writing his memoir, "Non Prophet," and our conversation touched on various aspects of the memoir-writing process. Whether you're an author planning to craft your own memoir or simply intrigued by the writing process, our discussion offers valuable insights into the challenges and triumphs of memoir writing.

The Unconventional Approach
From the outset, Slade’s approach to writing "Non Prophet" is a bit unconventional. Unlike the typical narrative that unfolds linearly, Slade chose to interlace three distinct timelines: his childhood past, his near past, and his current life experiences. This approach demanded a delicate balance between different life stages, yet allowed for a dynamic storytelling method that keeps readers engaged.

Writing Through Challenges
Slade's journey into writing began somewhat serendipitously. Following an injury, he found himself with the unexpected time to focus on his memoir. During our conversation, he shared how this incident became a 'sign' or a catalyst, confirming his commitment to share his story. "I have to write it," he said, illustrating the passion driving his work despite life’s unexpected turns.

Blending Life's Layers
An essential part of Slade's narrative involves integrating various life stories and moments of epiphany, particularly through the lens of online dating. This method provides a narrative structure where past experiences are interwoven with current life events, assisting in painting a full picture of his character and story.

Challenges in Crafting the Narrative
One of the hurdles in memoir writing that Slade discussed was deciding what to include in the story. When writing about living individuals, especially family, it becomes essential to navigate delicately, being honest yet considerate, so as not to harm relationships. Slade emphasized an end goal focused on love, forgiveness, and understanding.

The Importance of Feedback and Editing
In our engaging discussion, Slade highlighted the importance of external feedback. He spoke about using beta readers to pinpoint gaps he was naturally inclined to overlook due to his close connection with the material. Furthermore, he noted the necessity of working with an editor to elevate the memoir from a self-reflective piece to a polished, public-ready work.

Final Thoughts and Advice for Aspiring Memoirists
As our conversation drew to a close, Slade provided invaluable advice for fellow writers: finding a balance between honesty and sensitivity, particularly when discussing personal or sensitive topics involving others. His openness and introspection bring a refreshing layer to what we anticipate will be an impactful memoir.

For those interested in keeping an eye on Slade’s journey or potentially reaching out with advice or editorial recommendations, he can be found at www.sladewilliams.com, on Instagram, and on X @gsladewilliams.

Writing a memoir is not just about recounting experiences; it's about weaving a narrative that speaks to the heart and truth of one's journey. Slade’s story, filled with personal insights and reflections, serves as a beacon for authors poised to embark on their own memoir journey. Follow along for updates on "Non Prophet" and be ready to dive into a memoir that promises to touch both the mind and soul.
