Unveiling 'The Regression Strain'
'The Regression Strain' is a captivating medical thriller featuring a young doctor from Houston who embarks on what he anticipates to be an easy cruise ship job from Copenhagen to New York. However, as the narrative unfolds, things take a mysterious turn aboard the ship, challenging him to uncover the truth behind the strange behaviors of those around him. Hwang’s novel is a page-turner, expertly combining suspense and medical intrigue, ensuring readers are hooked from start to finish. The Journey of Writing a Medical Thriller In our conversation, Kevin shared his journey from attempting to write novels unrelated to his medical background to embracing it as a source of inspiration. As a practicing internal medicine physician, Kevin decided to leverage his expertise, making 'The Regression Strain' his debut novel. Although he reads widely across genres and doesn't primarily favor medical thrillers, he found this subject fitting for his first venture, merging familiarity with innovation. Timing and Impact: Writing Before and During a Pandemic Interestingly, Kevin began writing 'The Regression Strain' before the COVID-19 pandemic. He reflected on the unexpected relevance his fictional pandemic would have during such globally challenging times. Initially, he worried readers might avoid pandemic-themed stories post-COVID, but recognized the timeless nature of storytelling, assuring himself that his unique narrative would still find its audience. Research and Authenticity: Crafting a Believable World To authentically depict life on a cruise ship, Kevin conducted extensive research. From observing on-board experiences during his own cruises to scouring YouTube and engaging in travel forums, he committed to ensuring the novel's setting was credible. Despite not having served as medical staff on a cruise, his dedication to portraying an accurate environment is evident throughout the book. Plotters vs. Pantsers: Kevin's Writing Process Kevin identifies as a hybrid writer, blending plotter and pantser techniques. While he sets out major plot points to avoid straying from the narrative path, he embraces flexibility in writing, adapting to the story’s demands. This dynamic approach allowed him to adeptly weave foreshadowing and critical plot developments, enriching the reading experience. More Than Just a Thriller Beyond being a thrilling narrative, Kevin's novel explores deeper themes, reflecting the protagonist Peter's internal struggles and moral dilemmas. While not preachy, the book invites readers to consider the complexities of worldview and survival, especially in extreme circumstances reminiscent of real-world challenges. Upcoming Projects and Inspirations Looking forward, Kevin is developing a follow-up to 'The Regression Strain,' potentially expanding the world he so vividly crafted. While maintaining the novel as a standalone story, he's opened the door for further adventures, exploring new conflicts and character evolutions. Additionally, a separate book set in the 1980s remains in the pipeline, promising fresh and intriguing narratives from this talented author. I urge everyone to pick up a copy of 'The Regression Strain' and experience firsthand the suspenseful brilliance of Kevin's storytelling. You won’t be disappointed.
