I’m excited to share insights from my recent conversation with Theresa E. Evans, author of the deeply moving memoir, Choosing to Die. This book offers a profound reflection on life, the inevitability of death, and the spaces in between where healing and acceptance take root. The Underdog is a memoir by Dr. Hakam Bhullar. This is a story of systemic racism toward veterinarian's in BC Canada. But it is so much more.

Without a doubt, when reading The Underdog, you will learn quite a bit about schooling and regulations regarding veterinarians. You will also see how the organization meant to regulate vets purposefully used their power to discriminate against immigrants, especially those of Indian background. But more importantly, you will learn of someone who was willing to put his life and his livelihood on the line to prove it was happening.

I think the thing that meant the most to me is that Hakam didn't just talk the talk. He also walked the walk. He spent over a million dollars of his own money in this fight. He lost his license to practice. He was slandered and threatened. And even when he was sure he would never be allowed to practice again, he still fought on, not for himself, but for anyone who followed later. Hakam fought because it was the right thing to do, even though the odds of winning seemed slim and sometimes nonexistent. I also loved that he didn't paint himself as the perfect victim. He didn't always follow the rules and sometimes said or did things that he later had second thoughts about.

Although I am not a veterinarian nor do I live in Canada, I loved this story. If you like to root for the little guy, then this is a memoir for you.
